  • The project aims to introduce a new technology to screen for and monitor jaundice quicker, cheaper and less-invasive for patients in low-resource settings. The technology has been developed by Picterus and is currently being clinically tested at St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, Norway. The technology will be CE-certified on the basis of this test. The technology can be placed in an application to be downloaded onto a smartphone or other digital device with a camera. The app analyzes the skin color of a newborn by using the camera on the device, and compares the measured skin color to skin simulations with varying amounts of bilirubin. An accompanying color calibration card is used by the app to provide accurate measurements correcting for differences in light conditions and hardware. Picterus’ technology eliminates the effect of varying natural skin colors. The expected result of the project is a measuring tool that works on all newborn in the world, regardless of the child's ethnicity.
